The Land of Mist by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

In The Land of Mist, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle uses the cast of characters from his other Professor Challenger stories to engage in an expedition of an unexpected nature. The story chiefly follows the spiritual journey of Ned Malone as he investigates the practices of the Spiritualist movement in the 1920s in his capacity as a journalist. Gradually he and Professor Challenger's daughter, Enid, find their hearts and minds being impacted by the people they meet and the experiences that they have.

Unlike the other Challenger stories by Doyle, this one was deeply personal. Carefully and unapologetically, the author attempts to make the case for the Spiritualist movement and to answer objections. He even goes so far as to weave testimonies of his own or his fellow Spiritualists into the text, explaining and justifying them in a series of appendices found at the conclusion of the book.
